The social, industrial and commercial history of Nuffield College’s “Island Site” in West Oxford
The area to the west of the city centre bordered by Hythe Bridge Street, Park End Street, the Worcester Street car park and Frideswide Square was acquired in 2015 by Nuffield College on a 220-year lease from Christ Church. It is perhaps the last remaining potential development site of any size in central Oxford and Nuffield intend to build a new social sciences centre there over the next ten years. The area is full of social, industrial and commercial history and this talk will highlight buildings and structures which remind us of this rich heritage.
