Beer, sausages and marmalade: Food, drink, politics and tourism in nineteenth-century Oxford

In the nineteenth century Oxford had a burgeoning brewing industry, and was well-known for its ‘Celebrated Oxford Sausages’ and for Frank Cooper’s ‘Oxford Marmalade’. The families who controlled the production of food and drink had a powerful influence over the city’s economic, social and political life. This walk examines the fascinating relationship between food production, tourism and politics in Oxford.

Please note that the content of this walk overlaps to some extent with that of the St Thomas’s walk, the Industrial buildings walk, and the Brewing walk.

You can join the Beer, sausages and marmalade walk starting from the Museum of Oxford on these dates in 2025: 5 April, 14 June, 6 September. Advance booking recommended; further information here.

Or, contact me on 01865 242760 or liz@lizwoolley.co.uk to book the Beer, sausages and marmalade walk for your own group.

An illustrated talk on this topic is also available.
